Olympic legacy

End-to-end management of a sweeping mixed-use development in between the London 2012 Olympic Games zone and the existing Stratford Town Centre. Development proposals for Westfield Stratford City demarcated a new piece of city that was under review and scrutiny by a large number of parties and stakeholders, making design and delivery complex and demanding. Management included many strands, such as: rigorous consultation, negotiation and presentation with stakeholders including the public, the local planning authority, the Stratford City Design Review Panel, Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Design Review Panel, and the Stratford Town Centre Regeneration Panel; managing and overseeing areas of work Westfield delivered for or with the ODA, Transport for London, London Underground and High Speed 1.

Our scope

The design and delivery of this immense project involved the following strands of work:

  • Consultation and negotiation with the local authority on planning matters.

  • Consultation and presentation to various planning and design panels, some of which were given delegated powers on approvals. These included the Stratford City Design Review Panel, Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Design Review Panel, Newham City council, and the Stratford Town Centre Regeneration Panel.

  • Public consultation and presentations.

  • Managing external designers on infrastructure, public realm and public art elements.

  • Managing the brief and integrated design requirements on areas of work Westfield were to deliver on behalf of other parties, or interface with, such as the ODA, Transport for London, London Underground and High Speed 1. This included ensuring an understanding of the financial agreements between parties where relevant.

  • Anchor tenant coordination and AFL audit through design.

  • Coordination with all internal stakeholders including Development, Operations, Leasing, Marketing, Commercialisation (advertising, revenue generation opportunities), Design and Construction, Retail Design.

  • Management and coordination of Westfield’s internal design team to produce cost effective solutions for design and delivery of the retail areas at concept stage, and external designers appointed to carry out construction documentation.

This project experience was carried out by Rebecca Angel when part of Westfield’s D&C Senior Management Team (London, UK).
